Thread: BTRFS questions

first, should explain bit use case , requirements are.

i'm amateur photographer, , shoot tons of pictures. it's not hard rack 5gig of photos in 1 day shooting event or whatever. right 1tb drive filling pretty quickly, , every new generation of camera, file sizes keep getting bigger , bigger. old camera shot 3mb jpegs, current one, ~12mb compress raw files, , new 1 announced today rumored take ~24mb per photo.

also, of now, i'm playing dangerous game, since not have backup system. lots , lots of data causes quite problem since it's not easy move around place place.

had settled on trying build software raid setup. ruled out hardware raid due cost, , insecurity in knowing in expensive controller card took dump data gone (correct me if i'm wrong). fake raid (mobo raid) same reason, filesystem tied mobo. understand it, ubuntu software raid isn't hard move 1 computer , more flexible. but, raid (i'd interested in raid 5) understand need have identical sized partitions. so, in 5 yrs if want grow raid built out of 2tb drives, , there commonly available larger drives on market, it'd stuck shopping more 2tb drives.

heard bout zfs, , it's linux cousin, btrfs. understand it, can build file system out of kind of mis matched partitions, , grow them want. if 5 yrs need add space, plop on 5tb drive (pretending in 5yrs that's commonly available size) , remove aging 1tb drive, etc., etc.,. understand has same backup redundancy benefits of raid array...

so, if string few drives build btrfs array, what's easiest way it? complete , total idiots guide written layman great. information assumes have fair amount of base knowledge, if don't, me, lost after 2nd paragraph. google around , 90% of find setting btrfs file system boot partition have no need boot it. i'm more happy boot off of smaller drive , use btrfs mass file storage. that, or how compile tons of stuff source code. i'd rather not have that. there way practice off line in virtual machine or complicated? risks, if any, involved managing large btrfs setup?

thanks,
bm

recommend using entirely separate disk(s) backup. 1 software or typing error can erase file system contents. if you're relying on raid of kind, error faithfully replicated across backup drives. , btrfs doesn't have fsck disk repair utility yet.

don't have same number of pictures do, wife did take several thousand photos on our last holiday , have done more if hadn't dropped camera onto tiles on. use external hard drive , use program rsync update backup drive (much quicker full copy) occasionally. external drive goes in cupboard.
