Thread: Hardy, Lucid, Natty: Installs OK, Boots fail
if you're trying install late versions of ubuntu on system using classic pata (parallel-ata) ide hd (hard drive), make absolutely jumpering on hd set cs (cable-select), rather master or slave.
requires - or @ least, implies - use of 80-conductor udma cable connect ide controller hd, and, in multiple-hd pata systems, primary (#0, master) hd on ide channel connected device plug @ end of ide cable, , secondary (#1, slave) hd cable's intermediate or in-line connector. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/parallel_ata
oddly, ubuntu doesn't care whether pata cd/dvd drive(s) on secondary ide controller, 80-conductor udma cable, jumpered master(/slave) or cable select - work ok, regardless. (i love consistency!)
not discovery, ok? i'm stubborn, not bright. did bit of exploring, , less-than-more systematic testing, trying trace alternatives , map reactions, all credit (and sincere thanks!) goes to:

spent 2 weeks trying ubuntu on older system:
mb - biostar nf 325a7-03
processor - amd athlon 64, 3400+ stepping 00
ram - ocz4001024v3 (x2), 2 x 1 gb, ddr 400
hd - western digital wd800jb-00jjc0 (80 gb, pata)
cd/dvd - optiarc ddu1678a-0b, pata
graphics adapter - asus n7600gs silent
without ubuntu install on hd, "please insert system disk..." message came before grind of floppy-seek @ end of post (power-on self test) had died away. ubuntu system on hd, there brief noticable pause before message showed up. obviously, going on, didn't end well.
wanted 32-bit lucid, ended trying 32-bit lucid "alternate" install, too, natty, hardy (livecd public library book), , 64-bit lucid, well. result never varied: live-cds fire in "try-me," installs went uneventfully, , installed file-systems didn't kind of unusual (that know for, anyway). every effort boot installed system failed same way, (bios?) message there no bootable disk in cd drive. (my boot-device order floppy, hd, cd.) went , installed windoze, 10 days morass, make sure nothing dire had happened 80-gb pata hd. windoze didn't have problem booting up...
at guess, applicable versions of ubuntu map pata hd "sfa*" (vs. earlier "hda*"). doubt it's cure-all, - after reading more thousand posts in forum - should eliminate number of problems, , clear deck investigating , resolving rest.
