Thread: 11.04 PPC install w/ ATY,R420 (x800 xt) AGP problems

i first stating preamble:

commend programmers , hackers, crackers (ubuntu community) whom have diligently , consistently dev'd power pc community. others , appreciate dedication.
i've been mac user , owner since kid , have experienced superior , long lasting computers. such, want hang on 'baby' -- g5. long machine continues function, want make of architecture power4 design. love machine , not want waste money on ‘upgrading.’
linux newcomer , have researched couple of days. have cheap 9600 dual dvi agp ordered ebay on way, enjoy using far superior x800xt card , willing can make happen.

i’ve attempted install live , alt cd’s drapper, hardy, excluding other 8-9 versions. of course, know command lines use generic video drivers ‘video=ofonly’ ‘live video=vesa’ ‘livenofb’ etc..

have garbled colors , yaboot not function on versions. (not loading linux, while holding down option)

later, attempted install alternate versions of 10.1 assume have worked if have fixed windfarm issues , altered ‘xorg.conf’. each attempt lead either wind farm issue, or after initial ubuntu screen, screen go blank.

after 2nd stage boot in yaboot attempted modify ‘xorg.conf’ enter console via single user mode using, ‘linux single nosplash’ (which did not let me use sudo or work @ in cases)

used ’linux single debug nosplash break =premount’ worked, had no idea how access sudo there

gave , decided install minimal installations hardy natty; hoping include shell , console sudo way success. minimal cd's installed entire os before tweak it. unfortunately, versions except 11.04 installed whole os desktop.

install desktop, , x11 in 11.04 kernel/console know how run:

‘sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xorg ubuntu-desktop’

after suppose need config x11 make baby fire?

11.04 hangs cursor endlessly after install command , reboot , 11.04 , 11.1 beta when install live.

have repartitioned free space largest drive , installed ‘bare bones’ 11.04 console, edit ‘x.org.conf’ 'sudo nano /etc/x11/xorg.conf'

before this, have question: how edit xorg conf file, , natty 11.04 fit setup? (good or bad)
