Thread: Need assistance with hybrid graphics
a few months ago lenovo u460 laptop started overheating , abrubtly shutting down when set use discrete video card (nvidia). happened both in windows 7 , ubuntu. worked fine when set use onboard intel graphics chip. unfortunately, couldn't figure out how switch onboard mode in ubuntu (that version 10).
yesterday tech came out , replaced motherboard , video card. nvidia graphics work better both in windows 7 , ubuntu (now v11). still, if play video long enough in ubuntu overheat , shut down. try switch on onboard intel graphics.
new linux gave ol' college try.
reviewed page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/hybridgraphics). step 1 execute command: grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-2.6.* , result was
/boot/config-2.6.35-22-generic:config_vga_switcheroo=y
/boot/config-2.6.38-10-generic:config_vga_switcheroo=y
assume “y” means yes, kernal compiled correct version.
however, when execute second step (ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch) following:
ls: cannot access /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch: no such file or directory
happens whether use “sudo” or su -l or root login.
so... noting aforementioned webstite mentioned “modeset=1” kernal option must set, found site (http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/...up-workaround/), followed directions , line replaced “grub_cmdline_linux_default="quiet splash i915.modeset=1"” , did “update-grub”.
here's weird thing. able execute commands in first webpage activate , switch adapters. commands executed nothing happened. no screen flicker or nothing. ran command , pretended worked, in case, , ran long youtube video , shut down after few minutes.
since then, have not been able run switch commands (sudo, su -l, or root). once again “no such file or directory”.
thoughts?
