Thread: Virtual Serial Port? Do they exist?

hi all

i'll start saying forum excellent source of knowledge , thank have shared experience , continue so.

ok, down business.

system: ubuntu 10.04.3 lts

aim: create virtual com port

issue: havent goto clue how to! lol

need windows automotive application running through wine pick data bluetooth serial device.

linux works treat when 1 of com ports (pcie card) used pick information (serial cable connected straight device), when bluetooth device inserted machine, , bluetooth manager pairs 2 systems (pc uses belkin f8t017 bluetooth adapter), dont know how check see if virtual comport created. i'm guessing not, command:

dmesg | grep tty

doesnt show virtual com ports, 3 system has physically.

in windows xp environment, belkin software seems handle creation of 'virtual com port' visible within device manager (a config change has made automotive application pick new com port), , pairing takes place once application ran through bluetooth, concept works, in windows is!

however, reduce license costs utitlising ubuntu , virtual port created.

i'm going contact belkin see if can provide support linux, perhaps need software same belkin software windows? dont know....plucking @ straws here....

above @ guys appreciated.

on note, when installed different serial port card linux system , ran through installation notes, created ttyd ports? these different ttys ports?

can guess i'm relatively new linux finding system far more enjoyable plug , play environment of windows.

think i'm crazy there level of satisfcation in getting work.....and feeling of worth when technical resolution needed.....it'd seem can windows engineer within reason...

again guys....any @ great....
