Thread: Alienware with Unix?

i'm complete noob when comes unix, linux, have you: fact. i've installed ubuntu onto hp laptop of mine, , love it. wanted install ubuntu on current pc couldn't working quite right, graphics card if recall.

that's rambling before question, find myself in possession of alienware area-51 desktop, higher end lower end, , wondering if folks think idea run ubuntu on it.

pretty nonstop gamer, that's why want alienware, , once thought impossible game , use unix, know that's not true. i'm more worried operating system inhibiting hardware, hardware fantastic. hate being under microsoft's dominion, though windows included purchase, don't it.

tl;dr: alienware + ubuntu = fit?

as long works there's no reason not to. wouldn't hardware inhibited ubuntu. if find linux runs better windows on powerful hardware. when desktop, check works live cd session.

however, if want use desktop exclusively run windows games, should use windows. it'll easier overall , in case run better on hardware. native windows game run better in windows when using wine , linux. (incidentally, there great linux native games around if them.)

dual boot computers if want play game have reboot. don't play lot of games though , windows doesn't used often.

if have choice graphics card, nvidia on ati. ati drivers improving lot, i've used both ati , nvidia linux , have had better performance nvidia (this proprietary drivers installed, can't comment on open source ones). others chime in experiences though because used ati card short period of time few months ago.
