work database on lamp server , development environment set me on kubuntu system i've turned forum in past. have scenario: i'm managing database on server physically located in different town job's office is, work home , live in apartment complex pays , provides me comcast internet connection. since database has sensitive company information in it, take steps make internet connection secure.

told having internally assigned ip address , connecting internet through router not secure , assume means how vulnerable techy engineering students in building? when use of what's ip address websites can see external ip address different ip address mac tells me have when check under network settings. mac network settings tells me ethernet connections ip address, subnet mask, , router address, , different numbers.

have vpn software running on work laptop turn on anytime i'm doing work stuff.

questions are: (1) vpn software provide me security when login database or access company server, i'm not exposing company undue risk?

(2) correct in assessment connecting internet through router?

(3) there other steps should take secure internet connection , they?

basic assumption behind router correct. question of whether @ risk others in same building depends on how networking set building owners. there things can decrease visibility and/or vulnerability, i'll go in in minute.

however, initial question, if accessing work network through vpn, traffic secure.

there things can check if on openly shared network in building. however, aware running of these tests can interpreted offensive act, aware of this. network scan see other computers can see on network , services running on them, although second step not strictly necessary. if on open network, i'd suggest getting small wan router , using firewall between , rest of building.

more info on local ip address , subnet mask etc helpful confirm networking status of building. tell whether have enabled small subnets , vlan, segment network smaller, more secure individual "zones".
