Thread: Neither Windows XP or Ubuntu 10.10 will boot; No GRUB menu
so awhile ago downloaded 10.4 , later, 10.10, afraid install them fear of messing on desktop. well, managed cheap cable hecka old dell laptop , installed bodhi linux , uberstudent (both branches of ubuntu, believe), decided give try on hp/compaq desktop computer, since worked on laptop way, way outdated minimal problems, although different oss, technically.yeah, can't boot os on desktop , don't see grub menu or anything. i'm new linux , ubuntu, i've spent last 3 weeks researching , downloading , ripped out hair trying set up. desktop recent problem thursday.
first, after installing ubuntu, got blank screen on boot. had chosen "install alongside current os" option, chose external hard drive host ubuntu, created 91 gb partition using ubuntu partitioner thing. rebooted live disk, did little research, , re-installed ubuntu using advanced options. left boot loader location install suggested , set partition/drive ubuntu partition.
caused black screen blinking underscore (_) , nothing else.
honestly, i've tried many things it's gets difficult walk through processes, i've tried:
- booting livecd, downloading & installing lilo windows drive suggested online
- testdisk copy backup mbr
- plop boot manager (windows wouldn't boot, had blinking _; booting usb froze)
- super grub disk 2 & other one, rescatix
- re-installing ubuntu 3 times different settings each time
errors i've gotten:
- black screen (occurred after first ubuntu install)
- blinking _ (occurs when trying boot windows; used ubuntu after third install got second error below)
- error: no such device: [long string of letters , numbers--my external drive's uuid thing] , grub rescue >
- error: no partition device found (or that); appears when trying boot usb external drive after did (i think install ubuntu once again, think chose wrong partition or something..erg
)
- and current one, mbr 1: [blinking underscore]; appeared when booting internal hard drive/windows after running testdisk's copy-from-backup mbr thing
now, here's bunch of information; ran bootinfo several times after each various fixes failed solve problem:

don't know else needed, can tell, i'm fix-it-myself kind of person. well, can't fix myself hours of research, need people know they're doing or talking that's tailored scenario. can't keep spending time on trying working, have go school. computer life , can't use ancient laptop primarily; merely got , running creative writing , like, although it's flippin' heavy it's not fun carrying around (stupid dell).
, not have windows recovery disk or of sort, keeps coming in research. windows came pre-installed on of our computers. can, however, access window drive's original i386 folder through ubuntu livecd, if need use files, able to. in fact, files , drives accessible via livecd, great source of relief me.
i'm sorry writing , pasting much, want make sure there's enough information go off of. hope can me! @ least need 1 os working on desktop, , don't want reformat or reinstall windows xp. if ubuntu working now, might need windows later (since that's family uses , all).
thanks!
