some users may have trouble in setting umts connection. checklist common problems occur.

general:

ubuntu version 10.10 on umts support improved.

sim card:

  • disable pin code request (in mobile phone / win-software or umtsmon), helpful
  • stick sim-/netlock free (after change of provider)
  • enter puk (this 8-digit code unlock sim card if pin entered incorrectly multiple times)
  • sim card inserted correctly (or dirty)? (for groan @ point. can happen, happens, , no 1 needs embarrassed!)
  • sufficient funds available (may consumed using wrong apn)

miscellaneous:

  • check whether correct apn used
  • enter @ number * 99 # , never mobile phone number (i dont know if 99 country specific )
  • check: → users , groups → select "advanced settings" → user rights → checkmark in both entries, in word "modem" included, login once again changes take effect (manual applies gnome2-desktop apply other graphical interfaces corresponding suppliers).
  • disable parallel wlan / lan connection
  • use alternative dialer programs (from version 10.10 not necessary anymore.) umtsmon / vodafone mobile connect (bmc successor) / ixconn / sakis3g / wvdial / ubuntu kubuntu-nwm
  • if modem not detected or in disk mode: install "usb-modeswitch"
  • check whether package modemmanager installed (e.g. lubuntu lacks package in default installation)
  • in models set in disk mode automatically switched modem mode when drive / virtual cd removed (right click, remove drive safely).
  • (kernel) updates installed?
  • stick / modem work in windows?
  • browser in offline mode?
  • check whether "enable mobile broadband" set (click on icon in panel)
  • network manager: manually set nameserver settings in network manager
  • in cases may happen in network (under apn) or "mobile network code" must specified. overview here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mobile_network_code
  • connections may required. try different usb ports (if posible: notebooks try cardbus usb) avoid long usb extensions, possibly using y-cable. using y-cable or cardbus sticks better power supply. same effect achieved connecting powered hub (with power adapter).
  • in poor connections, may useful chose transmission rate (3g/2g). in gnome network manager (ubuntu until 10.10. possible) klick "type" button (default "any") , choose accordingly. likewise, in alternative dial-in programs , in k-network manager (kubuntu)
